Begin with a small, useful task
Choose one everyday annoyance to solve: a lamp you regularly forget, a hallway that needs lighting, or a door you want to check. Start with one room and a few devices. Our recommendation is to keep ordinary switches and manual controls easy to use, so everyone at home can still manage the basics.
Write down what success looks like before shopping. “The hallway light turns on after dark” is a clearer starting point than “make the whole house smart”.
Understand where control happens
Home Assistant runs on hardware in your home and brings supported devices together through integrations. Its setup guide covers installation, adding devices, dashboards and your first automation. You do not need to begin by writing code.
Local control means the relevant commands stay within your home network. Cloud control depends on an outside service. Home Assistant supports both: installing it does not automatically remove a device’s cloud dependency. Local devices and automations can keep working during an internet outage, provided their necessary equipment still has power and a working local connection. Optional Home Assistant Cloud services include convenient remote access.
Check the exact device
Before buying, look up the model and its Home Assistant integration. Check which functions are exposed, whether a separate hub or radio is required, and whether setup needs a manufacturer account. Home Assistant can discover some integrations automatically; others require manual configuration.
The Works with Home Assistant programme is a useful starting point for products verified for local integration. Treat its listings as model-specific guidance, rather than assuming every product from a participating brand is covered.
Prove the basics, then expand
Our suggested first-week checklist is simple:
Give devices clear names and assign their rooms.
Try manual control before adding automation.
Check behaviour after a restart and a brief internet disconnection.
Save setup instructions and recovery information.
Configure automatic backups before making larger changes.
Home Assistant includes backup tools and an automatic-backup setup in its interface. A modest system you can restore and explain is a stronger foundation for the next room.
